Obituary for Marvin Laurie Potter

Marvin Laurie  Potter
Our loving father , grandfather , great-grandfather , Marvin Laurie Potter passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in the Veterans Village at Sherbrooke Community Center at the age of 102 years 9 months. He was born in the family sod house in the Richfarms district north east of Nokomis February 7, 1913. September 5,1943 Marv married Lois (Pete) Fenton at Maple Creek, Sask. where he was stationed . After training in Eastern Canada as a signalman he was sent to England then on to France , Belgium , Holland ( Netherlands ) and Germany as part of The Regina Rifles Regiment . He returned home on the Queen Elizabeth, landing in New York City New Years Eve 1946; then a cross Canada train ride to Regina and then on to Nokomis ( home )

Marv lived in Nokomis for 94 years ; working in Epsteins store, then the Coop, off to war for a few years, then manager of the co-op until 1955 when he became postmaster until his retirement in 1978 when he took up part time farming, cabinet making , carpentering , travelling , picture framing . In 2007 he moved from Nokomis to live in Saskatoon at The Franklin for 8 years making many new friends ,doing jig saw puzzles, going to bingo, movie nights. The remaining year of his life was spent living at A-1 Personal Care Home and then Veterans Village , Sherbrooke Community Center .

He volunteered his entire life : 30 plus years as town councillor, Sunday School teacher, fire fighter , Boy Scout Leader , wood work teacher , window glazier , grass cutter, model builder (historical buildings ,churches, schools) , chauffeur , golf course builder and maintainer , forrester , salvage expert along with his brother Roy . The Royal Canadian Legion was a predominate part of his life for more than 70 years , the Orange Lodge and Orange Home at Indian Head for over 30 years .He was a charter member of the Nokomis Credit Union. He helped establish The Nokomis And District Museum spending countless hours, building, restoring, displaying doing whatever needed to be done. Building was a big part of his volunteer life helping on most projects and buildings built in and around Nokomis for over 50 years : The Community Hall , Legion Hall , curling rink , skating rink , post office ,his own home and many other homes, barns etc.

Left to mourn are his two children Larry (Linda Purcell) and Frances Elias (Garry); his grandchildren, Angela Wiens (Norman), Devin Elias (Lauri), Cory (Tracy), Colin (Barbara), Kari (Neil) and Cole Potter . Great grandchildren Brittney (Vincent), Benjamin , Clair Potter ; Nolan , Rylan Wiens; Brexton , Dawsyn Elias; Kaitlyn, Rachel, Preston , Mary Potter ; Jesse Reeds ; Jaden Reddemann . Marv is also survived by David Purcell (Melissa Hough), Asher , Aria ; Andrea Purcell; his in-laws Lottie Potter, Kathy Fenton, Christine Fenton, Oran and Yvonne Fenton and their families, nieces , nephews and countless friends.
