Obituary for Jake Sawatzky

SAWATZKY; JACOB PETER (JAKE)
October 10, 1936 - April 4. 2022

Jake was born and raised on the family farm in the Poplar Park District. Spending his early years working with his Dad and two older brothers he learned to love the rural life, farming and animals. He retained the love of nature all his life.
Jake took Grades 1-8 in the Plymouth School to which he either walked or rode his horse. Grades 9-10 were taken by correspondence under the supervision of the elementary school teacher in Plymouth School.
Jake loved to fish, hunt and camp visiting many parks and driving his motor home south in the winter. Jake and Ruth did cruises in the Caribbean, Mexico, California and European River Cruises in the Ukraine and Germany.
Once two of his brothers left the farm, Jake took over farming with his Dad while also doing road maintenance for the R.M. of Usborne. In the early 1970’s at the Potash Mine near Colonsay, Jake got employment first as a labourer and, in time with the continuing education program, received his Journeyman Industrial Mechanic papers. Jake worked for the mine for 30+ years until his declining health required him to take a medical leave. Jake was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the early 2000’s and also had a triple by-pass and heart valve repair in 2009.
Jake was predeceased by parents Peter and Katie Sawatzky, infant sister Margaret Rose, brother John, sister-in-law Irene (John Sawatzky) and sister-on-law Evangeline Sawatzky, parents-in-law Elmerr and Bertha Snider and brother-in-law Leslie Snider.
Jake leaves to mourn his wife Ruth of 43 years, his daughter Wendy and son Wesley (Laurel), granddaughter Katherine and grandson Jared, step-daughter Nastassia and family, one brother Peter, brother-in-law Boyd (Elaine) Snider of Waterloo, ON and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Health Care Community and in particular Manitou Lodge for the attention given to both Jake and Ruth over the past two years. Also huge thank you to the relatives, friends and community at large during the difficult times.
God Bless you all!
