Obituary

POTTS: Ian Arthur

October 11, 1939 – October 27, 2019

The death of Ian Potts, aged 80 years, of Simpson SK occurred at his residence on Sunday October 27, 2019.

Ian was born in Simpson at Bartels’ nursing home on 11 October 1939. He lived on the farm east of Amazon until 1946 when the family moved to Hope, BC briefly for work. The family returned to Amazon in 1947 where he grew up. He attended Amazon school until grade 9 and then went to Watrous for high school, graduating in 1958.

After high school Ian worked for Mackay Construction owned by Bill and Craig Mackay, where he felt fortunate to see many parts of Saskatchewan. In 1961, Ian met Jeanne in Watrous and they were married in 1965. They lived in Saskatoon where Jeanne had their four babies and Ian worked at the Allan Potash Mine and the Grasswood Esso.

In 1972, the family purchased their farm from Harold Quennell where Ian continued to farm until he passed away. Ian and Jeanne were involved with numerous activities to support their four children as well as being active community members.

Ian was a founding member of the Optimist Club in Simpson and called bingo for 16 years. He served the RM of Wood Creek as councillor from 1975 to 1980 and as reeve from 1980 to 1994. In addition, Ian was instrumental in promoting and constructing Mid Sask Terminal. He took great pride in this project and was very pleased to give personal tours.

Ian was a generous fun loving man. He enjoyed his crop checking tours and his visits with his family and friends. Literally and metaphorically his door was always open! His greatest pride of all however, was his children and grandchildren. It is difficult to put into words the love that was shown and the support that was given unconditionally to his loved ones. He was a role model and mentor to many of us and we feel blessed to have been a part of his life.

Ian was predeceased by his wife Jeanne, and his parents Arthur and Barbara Potts. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Lindon (Karen), Koltan & Klayton of Westlock, AB, Glendon (Paula) & Carter of Medicine Hat, AB, Cameron (Alison) Sadie, Carter, Hudson & Nash of Medicine Hat, AB, and Jacquelyn (Lonnie), Camryn & Morgan of Ponoka, AB; sister Ina (Jules) Vanthuyne, brother David (Joyce) Potts, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Tea will take place in the Watrous Civic Centre, Watrous, SK on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Private Family Interment in Watrous Cemetery. I first met Ian when Amazon School closed and those students came to Watrous. 57 years ago Ian was a best man at my wedding. Since that time, we have kept in communication and maintained our friendship. I'm glad we were able too get together in July for a visit.
Ian and Jeanne have left a wonderful family legacy. He will be missed by all who knew him.
As we age we all lose friends. Don't miss an opportunity to visit your friends often.
