Obituary for Joseph Jacob "Jake" Martell

Jake Martell age 75, peacefully passed away at the Watrous Hospital on July 7, 2018. Jake was born on the family farm near Guernsey Sask on May 2, 1943, the youngest of 15 siblings. Jake graduated from high school in Watrous and started working at the Lanigan Potash Mine. In July 1971 he married Shirley Fraser and soon after would move to Fort McMurray to work in the oil sands. Several years later they would move to Edmonton to raise their two children while Jake worked as a heavy duty mechanic on Caterpillar equipment.

His love of farming and the opportunity to farm would see him return to Saskatchewan to farm in the Usborne district for the next 25 years. Upon retiring from farming he would concentrate on the duties of owning and running the Mall on Main and 3rd which also included the bowling alley.

Some of Jake’s favorite activities included a love of bowling, fishing, pitching horseshoes and of course his Friday dart games with his good buddy Tracy Federspiel and the boys at Manitou Beach. Jake had a caring soul and a generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Jake is survived by his loving wife Shirley, his daughter Sherry of Regina and his son Rob (Christine) and grandson Chace of Calgary. Brothers John Martel of Edmonton, George Martel of Ft. Saskatchewan and sisters Bertie (Brian) Hamilton of Calgary and Lorraine Smorodin of Watrous.
