Obituary for Alice Louise Townley-McKay (Smith)

Alice Louise Townley-McKay (Smith)
Alice Louise Townley-McKay
The death of Alice Townley-McKay, age 96 years 11 ½ months, a long-time resident of Watrous, occurred at the Watrous Hospital on Friday, March 30, 2018.
Alice Louise Smith, was born on April 8, 1921 in Viscount, Saskatchewan. Her parents were Henry and Mary Anne Smith, who came from Prince Edward Island to homestead in Saskatchewan. She attended school in Viscount, and lived on the farm with her family until her marriage to Joe Townley-McKay on April 8, 1940. Following their marriage they moved to Watrous where they raised their family of Bev, Fred and Deb. Alice and Joe continued to live there until their deaths, with Joe predeceasing Alice on April 1, 1999. Alice lived in their original family home on 5th Ave. West, until she moved to Jubilee Court in 2011. Alice was a proud, resilient woman, determined to live on her own until the end, and she managed very well in doing that. Up until recent years she was an avid walker, walking everywhere, even in the cold.
Alice was active in Rebekahs, United Church Women’s group, and sang in the United Church choir. She had a strong faith and church was important to her. Working hard all her life, even in her later years, Mom took pride in keeping her yard neat and tidy and especially loved her roses.
Mom loved to bake, and loved sharing it with others. The grandkids were always excited about her ginger snap cookies! Knitting was a favorite pastime. Every child, grandchild and great grandchild has something that grandma had knit for them - an afghan, toque, mitts, socks, or stuffed animal. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage.
She worked for a number of years at Manitou Lodge. Mom was a caregiver, always looking out for her family and friends with phone calls or visits, and always had a bright smile for everyone.
Alice came from a family of six children, and was the last surviving member.
Predeceased by her husband Joe and son-in-law Don Teneycke, Alice is survived by daughter Bev (Norm) Stephan, Lanigan, son, Fred (Faye), Watrous, and daughter Deb Teneycke, of Saskatoon, six grandchildren, Lori Stephan, Marci (Daryl) Quesnel, Shannon (Dale) Sawatzky, Shawn (Tracy) Townley-McKay, Devon Teneycke, Kristin (Travis) Teneycke-Day; great grandchildren Euwen, Jennavieve, Alyse, Daman, Tobin, Gemma, Emily, Claire, Wiley and Lila.
