Obituary for Shirley Jean Telfer (Avery)

Shirley Jean Telfer (Avery)
TELFER Shirley Jean
Jan. 26, 1937 – Nov. 2, 2013

Shirley Jean Telfer (Avery) was born in Moose Jaw Sask to Gunda and Lee Avery on January 26th, 1937. She was the second of five children: Gilbert, Yvonne, Arlen and Karen.

Growing up in Moose Jaw Shirley attended Tech High School. She had a love of sports and was a great basketball player. Many of her team mates recall she could always be counted on to be in her position. Shirley loved school and as a small child dreamed of the day that she could go to school with her brother Gilbert. She often talked about her school years, especially elementary school. Shirley loved her teachers and had a great respect for them as well. Her friends remember her sense of humour and love of movies. They often spent afternoons or evenings with her at the theatre enjoying a musical.

When Shirley left high school she worked in a number of jobs including the courthouse and the library. Shirley met Gerry Telfer through mutual friends and they married in 1964. Gerry and Shirley lived in many communities across Saskatchewan for his work, including: Regina, Weyburn, Swift Current and finally Watrous. Gerry and Shirley had three children; Pamela (Darrell), Kory, and Scott. Gerry also had a love of sports and encouraged Shirley to learn to curl. She took it up quickly and excelled. She especially enjoyed spending time with her team mates and curling friends. Shirley was a sports oriented person and passed that onto her children.

Shirley had a great love of reading and books which stemmed from her early education, that she also passed onto her children. She loved to laugh and enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Add a strong cup of coffee and she was set.

Shirley passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon, SK. A Memorial Service will be held in Fotheringham’s Funeral Chapel, Watrous, SK on Friday, November 8th at 1:00 p.m. Private Family Interment in Watrous Cemetery. For those so wishing donations to Camp Easter Seal would be appreciated. For online condolences, tributes or to make a donation please visit http://www.fotheringham-mcdougall.com
