Obituary for Lottie Mayford Potter (Meikle)
Lottie Mayford Potter – Nee Meikle, was born in the Lockwood area to James Ernest Meikle and Mary Janet Meikle – nee Reeves on November 18th, 1915. She was the youngest of 6 children born to this marriage. Her mother passed away when she was only a little over 7 years old. Her father remarried, but only lived another 5 years after the passing of her mother. Lottie lived with other families which included her older siblings’ families after the passing of her parents, while completing her schooling at Howat School, following which she moved to Manitoba to work as a house keeper and in the Grain Exchange cafeteria.
About 1940, Lottie returned to Saskatchewan to work for the Skippon’s, during this time she met and married Roy Potter, and from this union there were 4 children Reg, Jean, Arlene and Doug.
Uncle Dunc and Aunt Lottie Meikle and their brick house at Lockwood were very special to her. She learned to cook with her Aunt and had many special memories of times spent in their lovely home especially the Christmas gatherings. In 1953, her Aunt and Uncle moved to Regina, and Lottie and Roy hosted the family Christmas day gatherings for many years thereafter. Lottie herself was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews. Niece Doreen lived with the family for a few years while she taught at Richfarms School creating a very special bond.
Lottie enjoyed the farm, growing a garden, welcoming visitors and always insisting they stay for a meal. She really liked the Toronto Blue Jays baseball as well as curling on TV, plus playing games like scrabble, rummy and even played solitaire on a computer. Although Lottie was not one to go out and about a lot, she kept close tabs on family and friends through the telephone and writing letters, and everyone liked to keep her current on their family happenings.
For many years Lottie supplied coffee, tea and goodies for shooters who attended the Nokomis Gun Club which had its indoor activities in the range on the farm yard.
She lived at the farm until in her 99th year when ill health and reduced mobility caused her to need assistance with living and she moved to long term care at the Nokomis Health Centre. Lottie passed away at the Health Centre on December 20, 2018.
She was predeceased by her parents, daughter Jean, her siblings, husband Roy and his siblings. She is survived by sons Reg (Janet) & Doug and daughter Arlene (Ron) Gerein and grandsons Dan (Tammy) and Mike (Kim) and great-grandsons Connor, Noah and Grady.
