Obituary for Walter Hill Penrose

Walter Hill Penrose
Walter Hill Penrose

March 8, 1920 - August 23, 2013

After a brief illness Walter passed away peacefully in Watrous Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife Mollie, his mother and father, Mabel and Oscar and sister Mattie, and nephews Ken and Les . He is survived by: his children, Richard (Carolyn), Peter (Cyndy) Kathy Probert (Bruce) and Robert (Melody); his grandchildren; Molly, Jessica, Cody, Sara, Paul and Andrew (Mandy) and his great-grandchildren Beth and Kash; his niece Bernice Meyer (Harold), nephew Gary Andrews (Donna), niece-in-law Adele Andrews.

Walter was born in Watrous and raised 3 miles south on the family farm. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1941 – 1945. His RCAF service with the new technology of radar nurtured his love of all things technological. Walter brought home from England his beloved wife Mollie. Together and with their children they developed a beautiful dairy and grain farm. Walter believed in building a strong community and participated as RM councillor, on the school, hospital and veterinarian boards. He was president of the Saskatchewan Holstein Friesen Association and served as director for the Saskatchewan Dairy Pool for many years. He was a counselor for the provincial CAFF (Counseling and Assistance for Farmers) program

Family and friends remember Walter for : - his sharp wit and humor - his passion for farming and the land - his appreciation for new technology vehicles, tools and machinery - his work ethic - the ease with which he talked to people of all generations - his grid road driving ability - whistling with a built in vibrato - his kit kat and shoehorn distribution - the dapper way he dressed - his time spent driving us to 4-H, games of curling, baseball, hockey, basketball, and band camps - sharing his Western Producer and plums from his plum tree - introducing us to CBC radio and Nat King Cole - his collection of gadgets and good pens - his love of debating current events and the state of the world - treats in his pocket for all the family’s and friends’ dogs.

He was a tease, a quiet leader, an observer and a story teller extraordinaire. His great-grandchildren at the ages four and two had already figured out how special he was. We love him and will remember him in the sunshine, the seeding and harvest, and a song well sung. He is much loved and truly Unforgettable. A graveside service for family will take place, Saturday August 31st in the Watrous Cemetery.
